The NCA Primitive Carousel
"Flying Horses"

National Carousel Association Logo © Bette Largent
Date of picture: August 2005
The "Flying Horses" was a portable carousel, with 12 primitive but colorful horses and two chariots. Traces of the original paint can be seen above and one can imagine how bright and cheerful they were when first painted.

With realistic touches, such as leather ears and real horsehair tails and manes, the legs were carved in rocking horse style. The bodies are solid "trunks" and all hang from a simple frame of swinging rods.
